COMPAS at Sentencing: What it Means and How it Should Be Used at Sentencing

The Michigan Department of Corrections plans to use COMPAS in every presentence investigation report beginning this summer. All presentence investigation reports will include risk assessment information pursuant to a new Michigan Department of Corrections' Policy. This session will incorporate the earliest reports of use at sentencing and will discuss the meaning of the COMPAS scores, reliability of the scores, limitations on their use and the constitutional and state-law objections to raise at sentencing hearings.
